Home to Lake of Egypt & Ferne Clyffe State Park

Goreville, Illinois is a small rural community located in northwestern Johnson County, one of the oldest counties in Illinois. We’re located in the area of SOUTHERN ILLINOIS called Little Egypt. We are about 15 miles south of Marion, Illinois and about 35 miles north of Paducah, Kentucky. We have a population of about one thousand citizens.

We are proud of our community, our schools, churches and local businesses. We believe in the principals that make up our Core Values: God & Country, Family & Friends, Our Children, Our School, The Bill of Rights, The Ten Commandments, Hunting & Fishing, Nature & Wildlife, and Our History.

Our heritage runs deep within the community and surrounding country-side, with families living here for generations. Our neighbors who have moved away for what ever reason, almost always return home.

We are located close to all of the major shopping and recreational areas in Southern Illinois, Southeast Missouri and Western Kentucky. We are located in the heart of Southern Illinois, the Shawnee National Forest and we are the home of the Lake of Egypt and Ferne Clyffe State Park.

We are located atop of one of the highest ridges in Illinois, over looking the beautiful Shawnee Hills and the Illinois Ozarks. Goreville and the area around us is an ecologically diverse place, from upland to lowland species of trees to the abundance of wildlife, you are sure to love our surrounding beauty.

We are also located between two award winning wine trails; therefore, we are also known as the Gateway to the Southern Illinois wine country.

Our close proximity to two major interstate systems; Interstate 57, just west of town and Interstate 24, just east of town, makes Goreville easily accessible from anywhere. Over thirty thousand vehicles drive by Goreville each day, along the interstates. Illinois Route 37, the main thoroughfare through town, is a busy roadway as well with an average traffic of over 4,500 vehicles daily.
